Think of this as an update on the taco bar: Lay out a platter of seasoned, lime-doused avocado halves and bowls of toppings, and let guests help themselves.

- 1 teaspoon minced garlic (from 1 garlic clove)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- Coarse salt
- 1 large tomato, diced (1 1/2 cups)
- 1/4 cup roughly chopped fresh cilantro leaves
- 1/4 cup diced red onion
- 4 limes
- 2 ounces Cotija cheese, crumbled (1/2 cup)
- 4 avocados, chilled
