  • Pinch saffron, optional
  • 2 1/2 cups boiling water, for rice, plus 1/2 cup water, for sauce
  • 1/2 pound ground lean beef
  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
  • 4 ounces tomato sauce
  • 5 large eggs
  • 2 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 5 large fresh sweet basil leaves, chopped
  • 1/3 cup dry white wine
