Ingredients

DESCRIPTION

This yeast dough is simple to make, but it needs to rise for about three hours total (before and after cutting into rounds), so plan accordingly.



INGREDIENTS

  • 1/4 cup warm water (about 110 degrees)
  • 1/2 cup sugar, plus a pinch
  • 1 package active dry yeast (1 scant tablespoon)
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus more for bowl and plastic wrap
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten, plus 1 egg for glaze
  • 4 1/2 to 5 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
